Raceway Petroleum to pay $3.9 million

Posted on April 23rd, 2010 No Comments

Raceway Petroleum will pay $3.9 million to settle a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Labor claiming the company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act. The company must also pay $100,000 in fines. The complaint was brought by more than 700 current and former Raceway Petroleum employees, primarily gas attendants, who said they had been unfairly treated.

They alleged that they often had to work up to 100 hours a week, they were limited to one-half hour break each day, and they were not sufficiently compensated for overtime. The company was also under fire for inaccurate payroll records. The company was required to install an electronic timekeeping in each facility.

Some unpaid internships could be illegal

Posted on April 14th, 2010 No Comments

The federal government might soon begin cracking down on companies that violate the law regarding unpaid internships. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 lists six standards under which a company can take an unpaid intern. In spite of this, many employers still ask unpaid interns to perform above and beyond the legal limits of their position without offering compensation.

The recession has not improved the situation, because now many companies see unpaid internships as an easy way to keep their productivity level high without sacrificing precious finances. Many university students rely on experience gained in internships to secure a job after graduation. Several states have begun investigating and fining companies for violation of the law.

If you feel that you have been denied compensation and unfairly treated by your employer, you may be eligible to take legal action. For assistance with your case, contact the overtime collection lawyers of Tycko & Zavareei, LLP, at 202-973-0900 today.

Immigrants targeted in wage theft

Posted on April 9th, 2010 No Comments

More employers have used the recession as a reason to pay employees less than minimum wage or simply not pay what they promised, officials are finding. Those who work in restaurant, janitorial or construction positions are said to be particularly vulnerable, especially those who lack legal status or don’t speak English.

The District of Columbia’s Office of Wage-Hour reports that the number of workers seeking help to recover stolen wages last year went up 20 percent from 2008. Some nonprofit groups have begun trying to train cheated workers how to begin taking legal action.

If your employer has refused to pay you the correct wages or overtime pay for hours you have worked, you may be eligible to take legal action. For assistance with your case, contact the overtime collection lawyers of Tycko & Zavareei, LLP, at 202-973-0900.
